2004-07-15 - AVC Racing in Canada
Last weekend I drove up to Victoria BC, for the Ron Marat Memorial Track Race. It was a great weekend of bike racing and snooping about a new town. The weather up there is a bit weird, always wanting to rain, but usually kinda sunny, but the people where all really nice every where I went and the percentage of cute girls mixed about the population was much higher then most place.
The track and facilities where all in great condition, at first I thought the track would be quite fast, but the cool humid sea level air seemed to be quite thick and every ones times where much slower then I would expect on such a smooth track. Many familiar faces from alpenrose where there as well as many new friends.
The racing was good, there where many people with fairly similar times in the timed events which lead to a good mix in the sprints, keirin and mass start events. Future Olympian Lori-Anne Muenzer broke several track records and broke my record of not being beaten by a girl yet this year. in the final round of the sprints we had a 6 up 2 lap sprint for 4-9 place, she drew the high spot on the track for her starting position and went hard from the gun, and man did she go. After racing with and chatting with her a few times over the weekend I'll be cheering for her in the Olympics... ya ya call me a traitor if you must.
All and all the only part of the trip that sucked was the long wait for the ferry, what a pain in the butt and was one of the most expensive parts of my trip. I will definitely try and fit this race in my schedule again for next year.
