2004-11-01 - Phoenix Transit Keirin

As many know during the beautiful fall and winter months here in AZ I let my car collect dust and break out the old 1970's green rusty fixed gear commute bike, complete with 44x17 gearing to work on the ol' high cadence action when running late or catching a tail wind.

Tonight on the way home from the lab, well after sun down, I'm rolling along University doin 25ish and begin to pass a bus that has been sitting still to the right of the bike lane for as long as I could see it when he all of a sudden with no blinker or warning of any sort he whips out and floors it pushing me way out to the left and fully into the lane.. Next thing I know I'm pulling the exact same crap I'd pull in a race, elbows out, full acceleration to 35+, as close I can be with out making serious contact.. exactly on the white line between the two lanes of traffic passing two cars and the bus, after I chop the bus as best I can with out getting killed, get back in the bike lane and slow down to a cadence I can pedal with with out bouncing, I found myself waiting for the official to give me a warning... but the bus drivers dirty glare did the job just fine. Wee Ha and I thought I was gunna have to wait a couple more months before I started working on my keirin skills again.. In fact might just have to put on a bigger gear and do that on a regular basis.
